How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality

A practical guide to reducing image file sizes while keeping photos clear, plus how to choose the right format.

Start with the right image format

For photographs, JPEG and WebP are usually good choices because they can reduce file size substantially. PNG is better when you need transparency or sharp flat graphics, but it may not become smaller when compressed with a quality slider.

Choose quality for the job

A quality setting around 75–85% is a useful starting point for web photos. Compare the result at the size it will actually be displayed. Text, fine lines and screenshots may need a higher setting or a lossless format.

Keep the original and check dimensions

An image that is much larger than its display size carries extra bytes. Resize it to the largest dimensions you expect to use, keep an untouched original, and compare the exported file before replacing anything. QuickQR processes supported image files in your browser.
